Dear Proactive,
Thanks for your post. CSS-2008, to me, was a wonderful experience.
Since I am a bit busy these days in some other commitments, I will try to spare some time to write down all these things in detail.

Dear aspirants,
I was busy with my tough CTP routine that is the reason for this delay. Now let me share a few tips which might prove helpful in CSS prep:
All I learnt from CSS is that you have to be well versed with English which is the first and foremost requirement for getting even close to success in CSS. Then you have to be logical and analytical in your papers. When you discuss any issue you have to present as many sides of the pictures as you can (I believe one shouldn't confine him/herself to just two sides, as many people say). Then make a conclusion based on your given analysis.
Your writing style should be natural as well as convincing but rest assure you don't have to use pretentious way of writing. Write simple and clear words, don't try to rarify your writings with the use of complex words and phrases.
No denying the fact that "using suitable quotations, stating facts and figures, giving appropriate examples, charts & maps etc." serve as "icing on the cake" but you know the icing alone can't win you the appreciation if the cake itself is not baked properly. So the analytical way of writing is much more important than anything else.
Joining an Academy is your own choice, if you think you can do it without going to any academy it's up to you. I did it like this cuz i didn't have enough time to go to an academy on daily basis alongside a full time job. However, joining a good academy is also beneficial to get basics clear, discussions with peers, tips and tricks from seniors. So it is a matter of choice.
