Asalamalaikum
I just read about these full bright scholarships? Kher, in a post it was mentioned that you need a PS, so although what you need to put init will depend on the structure that the particular university /company/ scholarship people etc want, i thought i should just inform you of what not to put in it! its from a website. If you just google 'How to write a good personal statement' then its the first website option. I edited them a little.
-Don't sound arrogant and pretentious.
-I would try not to start any sentences with I
-Try and have an interesting phrase to start and finish on
-Don't try to be funny or make jokes in your statement- they may not find you funny
-Don't include your hobbies and interests unless they are relevant, an dif you do mention them , then explain them a little
-Don't use vocabulary you don't normally use and just looked up in a dictionary- you may end up putting it in the wrong context
-Don't use famous quotes in your statement
-Don't repeat things
-Don't lie or embellish the truth
-Don't say you are going to do something before you come to university
-Don't include boring phrases or hobbies which everyone does
-Don't take any political viewpoints
I hope this is helpful inshAllah. Perhaps someone could put up their PS as a good example or even add more tips inshAllah? Its always useful to look at good ones to get an idea of what to write and the struture etc.
I know that for university when i wrote mine, then i had to be formal, and we were only allowed to write about four concise and informative paragraphs. It may be different for you. Also, i would put mines up but it really wasnt great nor to the high academic quality that you would want for applying for a scholarship so im not going to. I hope you dont mind.
Also,
always read proof it. Take your time with it and
read it over to people you trust and who you know will be critically honest to you about what you have written and will give you constructive advice . Don't go asking various friends and family- they all have different views and it will confuse you- this happened with me. Thats why im saying, ask someone close to you who you can count on, like a good teacher! at the end of the day it was my teacher who came to my rescue. Or ask someone who has been through it all, who again, you trust for good advice.
Trust because there are some messed up people in this world my friends, who will not want you to get the scholarship or position... they will of course also not guide you in any way that you need and may in fact say 'yeh thats great' to a rubbish PS. This is why trust the person and be careful, this is my genuine advice to you.
Ok best of luck iA !
