There are several titles available in the market for preparation of compulsory subjects. I my personal opinion, you must not get confused with selection of books for compulsory subjects, sit back relax and plan a day of shopping for books. It may take sometime to choose the ideal book for yourself but once you have selected the proper book for yourself, it is rewarding. I mean only you can select the best book for yourself. Let me give you an example, for most of the CSS aspirants, Exploring the world of English stays a book of prime importance but for me it is not true since this book is/was not meeting my needs so I preferred the other option that is High School Grammar by Wren and Martin for Grammar and for idioms and other related things I happened to get hold of some other books available in the market as well as newspapers. This is how I see it. So, you need to spend sometime in market, go and have a look at all the titles available, have a look at the contents, have some feel by reading a topic or two from the book. Done with it, then decide on spot. This is the sincerest advice I can give you else for your satisfaction I would have listed some titles and you would have followed them blindly ending in damage and in extreme cases loss in face of failure. So go ahead, listen to your needs only then you will be able to decide what is good for you?
Apart from this, here you are with my selection:
1. English Essay: Daily Dawn
2. English Precis & composition: High School Grammar by Wren and Martin, Newspapers, websites like answers.com, dictionary.com etc.
3. Current Affairs: Daily Dawn, bbcnews.com, cnn.com etc.
4. Everyday Science: Matriculation level’s Biology, Physics and Chemistry books and Encarta Encyclopedia software.
5. Pakistan Affairs: Selected topics from Sohail Bhatti’s Pakistan Affairs, Lecture CDs of Pakistan Affairs by Virtual University.
6. Islamiyat: Islamiyat by Imtiaz Shahid, Surah meaning from Moulana Maudodi, Lecture CDs of Islamiyat by Virtual University.

Lecture notes will also work but here I would say that audio-visual learning is far superior to simple black & white reading. Thanks Proactive for sharing the email. Moreover, you can get these CDs from any virtual university campus. Otherwise, just go to http://bookshop.vu.edu.pk and choose which CDs or DVDs you want to purchase. A complete overview of how to buy from virtual university can be seen at http://bookshop.vu.edu.pk/web/processdiagram.aspx Feel free to put any other query you might have.
